No rush, but other providers do offer these protocols. IKEv2 is great for higher speed and autoreconnect among other things and WireGuard would be nice to have, being part of the linux kernel.

Hi @AtramentousFlux,

We have no plans for IKEv2. I don't want to say never, but it is highly unlikely we will ever support it. We do have plans for WireGuard and we will begin working on that as soon as we can. We have a fair bit of work to go before we get to that stage though.

Regards,
Peter @ Oeck.

IKEv2 would be awesome as my router supports that but not openvpn. I asked a while back if l2tp was going to be supported and was advised it wouldnt be, due to openvpn being the best method of handling the traffic routing their back end does. At least thats how I recall the answer being given, I hope I got it right :)

Hi @dooley,

Long time - no see. Hope you have been well!

Yes, at this point our only plans are to support OpenVPN and in the near future to support WireGuard. We believe this will be the best approach.

Hey,

Any update on Wireguard?
Hi rikta,

We started working on it, but Wireguard was pulled from pfsense and we are waiting to see what happens with that. We only want to run software with a proven track record of being safe for the user. Once we get more clarity on the situation we will resume working on it.

Due to the way it works it is also more complicated to integrate into our network, so it is a fairly large undertaking to begin with.

Regards,
Peter @ Oeck.

Thanks Peter,

May I ask, what is it that makes Wireguard (allegedly) so much better than OpenVPN?

No problem!

From a practical, consumer point of view - speed.

Wireguard requires less overheads than OpenVPN and as such is a much faster protocol. You can also use it on lower spec hardware than OpenVPN and not face performance issues. Having said that, compatibility is also much lower for Wireguard. It is a new protocol and it will take some time for it to have support across new hardware.

Do you think the choice between using OpenVPN or Wireguard is a factor in speeds on a connection that doesn't or cant go past the 100Mbit tier?
That all depends on your hardware. If your router, for example, has a CPU that can't deal with the overheads of OpenVPN, then yes. I have seen users put OpenVPN on weak routers and the best they can do is around 20Mbps. Wireguard ( if supported by the router ) will fix this issue.

But for devices like phones, tablets, computers... it shouldn't really make a difference.

It will be interesting to see how you guys get around some of the short comings in the Wireguard protocol. Various VPN providers are using different workarounds to overcome them. Keep us posted on what you come up with.

I'm only a layman when it comes to networking, but this article was interesting with regards to Wireguard https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn/wireguard/

Hi bladesong,

We do have a plan of attack. We are just waiting to see what happens with Wireguard itself.

Interested in this topic also. Just got Wireguard running at home as a server in docker, and connecting a mobile device back to home. Only issue is, it'll kick any other app running a VPN, ie; OECK. So, unless I route all my mobile traffic via the wireguard connection, I can't. I was hoping to subnet traffic to route to home, and all other traffic to route via another VPN.
